Hart baseball struggles with glove, bats in opening defeats

WHITEHALL — Hart lost its season-opening doubleheader to Whitehall Tuesday, 14-1 and 16-3.
The Pirates were unable to manage a hit in game one of the doubleheader, but did push across a run in the fifth and final inning. Caden VanGelderen drew a walk and advanced to second on a botched pickoff attempt. He then got to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Joseph Osorio.
The Pirates drew seven walks in all, including two each by VanGelderen and Jordan Theis. Hollis Rockwell and Aiden Cull split the game on the mound, each striking out three batters in two innings. The Hart defense struggled, committing six errors.
Hart had a little more offensive success in game two, scoring twice in the second inning and collecting five hits in all. Ethan McGrew had an RBI single, and Rockwell had two hits and scored twice. Cull and Theis each drew two walks. Rockwell and Theis pitched the game and the Hart defense had five errors.
