MONTAGUE — Shelby took a pair of defeats to Montague Thursday in a
battle of top teams in the West Michigan Conference's Rivers and Lakes
divisions. Montague won the games 8-4 and 11-1.
The Tigers
took a 3-0 lead early in game one before giving up a barrage of singles
in the fourth inning that led to eight runs. Evan Waller opened Shelby's
scoring with a first-inning RBI single, then singled again in the
third, resulting in Chase Simon scoring on an error. Leighton Belasco
then scored Waller with a single.
Seven of Montague's eight
runs in the fourth scored with two out, thanks to six straight singles
and a couple of Tiger errors. Waller drove in another run with a
sacrifice fly in the fifth, but that was the last Tiger tally in the
game.
Shelby's Neil Gowell lays a tag on a Montague baserunner on a pickoff play during Thursday's doubleheader at Montague. The Wildcats won the two games.
Simon, Waller and Belasco each had two hits in the game.
Michael Regeczi pitched 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief, and Eli Kelley
allowed only one earned run on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Game
two was scoreless through two innings before Montague ripped off three
or more runs in each of the next three, ending the game by mercy rule.
DayDay Garcia stole home in the fifth inning for the Tigers' only run.
Trevor Weiss got two hits in game two and also drew a walk. Decklan Waller pitched a shutout inning for Shelby.
