Last month, Hesperia High School’s marching band completed their week-long camp on Friday, August 14. New Hesperia Band Director David Ott arranged for the local fire department to provide some much-needed cooling off for the students to round off the weekly camp activities.
Ott is from the Bay City area and is a recent graduate of Michigan State University. He comes from a band director family, with his mother being a band director at Bay City Western for 26 years. He was recently hired to replace former band director Stephanie Purvis, who retired last year.
Ott said that aside from a couple of students who attended the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp that week, all of his students showed up and practiced hard from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on all five days, and that it was a very successful camp. The fire department cool-off was a little fun reward for working through the heat and humidity that week. He added, “I have nothing but pride and happiness towards this group. I’m super proud of them.”
