Two Girl Scouts from Hesperia Troop 8303 of the Michigan Shore to Shore Council were recently chosen to serve in the Mackinac Island Honor Guard Troop 147. Elaina Good and Ellie Hren were selected through an application process from a group of 7th through 12th grade girls for their commitment to service and the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
According to the Michigan Shore to Shore website, "since 1976, Girl Scouts have had the honor of serving in the Mackinac Island Scout Service Program (MISSP) program. It is an opportunity for girls to play a vital role on the historic Mackinac Island. Selected applicants serve the State of Michigan for seven days by taking on tasks including flag ceremonies, guide duties, and service projects. Being a member of the MISSP - Girl Scout Honor Troop 147 requires dedication, service, work and a lot of fun; all resulting in a memorable and valuable experience for girls."
Ellie shares a lot of international knowledge, having recently moved to the area from Australia. And Elaina and her troop have been part of many local service projects, including watering downtown flowers with the Hesperia Beautification Committee, participating in annual park clean-up days, gathering fresh product donations and organizing food drives for TrueNorth Community Services, and supporting veterans by serving meals at the Hesperia American Legion every Veteran’s Day and taking part in Flag Day and flag retirement ceremonies.
Good and Hren participated in a six-day training program in Muskegon and served on the island from July 5-13.
Service Unit 211 Director Barb Wright said, “I am impressed by these girls' dedication to the Girl Scout program. They are prime examples of courage, confidence and character. They do not travel with their parents for this opportunity. They have proven themselves time and again. Hesperia should be proud of their accomplishment. I know our Girl Scout family is so proud!"
