At a school Pentwater’s size, success in softball is often as much about the number of players on the roster as the skill level. The Falcons look solid in that respect, as coach Troy Holstad reported a roster that will be around 13 girls, including two from Walkerville as the schools co-op in the sport.
“It is a recruiting effort, so for many girls this is their first year playing and many are forced to learn new positions or a position for the first time,” Holstad said.
The Falcons went 5-16 a year ago and are hoping for a better mark this year behind a fairly experienced roster. Charlie Swanger looks to be the lynchpin of the offense and will play shortstop. Aubrie Adams will again toe the pitching rubber, and Karina Olivarez is set to catch. Speedster Lauren Davis will patrol center field. Alazae Acevedo will also be a big part of the offense.
The Falcons have county battles set up against Hart and Hesperia, and games against West Michigan D League opponents are of course schedule highlights. Holstad said battles with Mason County Eastern in particular tend to be exciting, such as the one-run game the squads played last April that the Cardinals won 7-6.
