Shelby baseball pitches, hits well in sweep of Bear Lake

Shelby rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Bear Lake Friday, picking up wins by scores of 13-0 and 8-2.
Game one, shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule, saw Eli Kelley pitch a two-hit shutout, striking out eight. The Tigers scored five times in the first inning - Evan Waller had a two-run single and Neil Gowell drove in another run with a single - and rolled from there. DayDay Garcia's two-run double helped fuel a seven-run fourth inning that secured the win.
Garcia had two hits and three RBI in the opener, and Gowell and Waller each plated a pair. Garcia, Waller, Trevor Weiss and Leighton Belasco scored two runs apiece.
Game two was much closer, with the Tigers and Lakers tied at 2 into the bottom of the fourth inning before Shelby scored twice to go ahead. The Tigers then added four more runs in the fifth before the game was called.
Shelby only got two hits in the nightcap - one each by Belasco and Gowell - but drew nine walks and three hit batters. Colin Fenton's bases-loaded walk gave Shelby the lead for good in the fourth. Garcia and Cam Smith each drew two walks.
Simon and Weiss split the game on the mound. Weiss allowed four hits and two runs in three innings, with three strikeouts, before Weiss came on and pitched two one-hit innings, also fanning three.
