Shelby golf takes 2nd at home invitational; Titan Carter shoots even par

SHELBY — Shelby led county golf teams Monday at its home invitational, playing a solid round and taking second place behind Ludington in the event, with a team score of 332.
As expected, the Carter brothers were a big reason for the Tigers' success. Junior Titan finished second overall, shooting an even-par 72 that included three birdies. Carter came up just one stroke shy of a tie for medalist honors with Ludington's Alec Rodenbeck, narrowly missing a putt for eagle on the 18th hole and settling for second.
Freshman Ivan, in his first 18-hole event, showed he was ready for varsity golf, shooting an 82 to finish 12th overall. Ivan made one birdie in his round and bounced back from consecutive double bogeys on the eighth and ninth holes to complete his final eight holes at just three over par.
"He is gaining confidence every day," Shelby coach Fred Inglis said of Ivan Carter.
Also for Shelby, Rafael Davis posted an 87, followed by Ryan Schouten, who like Ivan Carter finished strong. Schouten played his final seven holes at four over par and shot a 91 in total.
Inglis said Schouten's play will be a major factor in Shelby's success this year.
"If he is able to shoot 45-46 in WMC Rivers Division jamborees, then Shelby can make a serious run for first place," Inglis said.

Hesperia's Alex Scott hits an approach shot during Monday's Shelby Invitational. Scott led the Panthers in scoring and placed in the top 10 at the meet.
Hesperia's all-senior lineup had a solid day, shooting a team score of 352 to finish fifth. Alex Scott was the Panthers' top finisher, coming in seventh place with an 80. He did not shoot worse than a bogey on any hole.
Following Scott were Logan Kammer with an 89, Tim Hoaglin with a 90 and Vincent Lound with a 93. Hoaglin scored a birdie during his round.
"We are excited to see how the senior group plays this year," Hesperia coach Mark Arbogast said.
Pentwater finished 10th in the meet, propelled by Gavin Macher's top 10 finish. Macher took 10th place with an 81, making two birdies along the way.
Eighth-grader Izzabella Kollenda posted a 94 for the Falcons, including one birdie, and Brody Austin, a first-year golfer, shot a 103, also knocking in one birdie. Aiden Henry had a 105 to round out Falcon scoring.

Pentwater's Gavin Macher tees off during Monday's Shelby Invitational. Macher led the Falcons in scoring at the meet.
"It was so fun to bring almost a whole new group of kids to their first big event in the county," Pentwater coach Alicia Kolenda said. "Izzy, Carson (Stein) and Eli (Orde) were all so proud of how they finished as the youngest players in the field."
Hart shot a 391 to finish 11th, one spot behind Pentwater. Three Pirates broke 100 on the day, led by Wyatt Johnson with a 91. Logan Dean shot a 92 and Hunter Loudermilk had a 98. Braydan Baron was Hart's fourth scorer with a 110. Johnson and Baron each scored a birdie in their rounds.
"I was happy with how well Logan Dean, Wyatt Johnson and Hunter Loudermilk played," Hart coach Jen Hlady said. "All three of them were key players for our team and I look forward to seeing them continue to score for us."
