Shelby won the Mason County Eastern tournament Saturday, edging
Onekama 3-2 in its first game before routing the host Cardinals 18-3 for
the title.
The Tigers (20-6) were dominant in the finals,
winning in four innings and scoring at least three times in all four,
highlighted by a nine-run explosion in the second.
The first
three batters of the finals reached, and Emma Stovall drove in two runs
with a single to get the scoring started. Stella Springer added a RBI
single later in the inning.
In the second, Jayna Burmeister
connected on an inside-the-park two-run home run, and Jaedyn Allen
followed a couple batters later with a RBI triple. Hali Hayes then
singled Allen in. Daniella Zarraga and Stovall had run-scoring hits in
the inning as well.
Stovall went 4-for-4 with four RBI and
three runs scored, and Hayes had three hits and three runs, driving in
two. Burmeister got two hits, scored three times and drove in two runs.
Jordan Wolting scored three runs and got the win in the circle.
The
Onekama game ended with dramatics as Wolting ripped a RBI double to
score Izzy Rudat and end the game via a walk-off. Rudat ran for Zarraga
after the latter's leadoff walk in the seventh inning and was sacrificed
to second by Allie Stovall to set up Wolting's winning hit.
The
Tigers were held to three hits in the game, and Wolting drove in two
runs. Burmeister picked up the win, striking out 16 and allowing three
hits. She walked eight.
