Oceana 4-H shooting sports program is back

After several years without an active program, Oceana County 4-H is excited to announce the return of 4-H Shooting Sports. Thanks to the dedication of local volunteers and support from community partners, youth once again have the opportunity to learn safe firearm handling, marksmanship, and sportsmanship through this hands-on educational program.
The club is led by certified 4-H Shooting Sports instructors Pam and Russ Velat, Dave Van Putten, and Chuck May, who have volunteered their time and expertise to bring the program back to Oceana County. Meetings are hosted by the Fin and Feather Club in Scottville every other Tuesday from 6-8 p.m.
Currently, youth are learning Air Rifle, BB Gun, and .22 Rifle disciplines while developing important life skills such as responsibility, self-discipline, focus, and decision-making. The program places a strong emphasis on safety and positive youth development, making it much more than just target shooting.
One of the greatest strengths of 4-H Shooting Sports is that it is open to all youth in Oceana and Mason Counties ages 9-19, regardless of experience level. Membership is free, and no equipment is required to participate. The club has equipment available so youth can try the sport and learn the fundamentals before making any investment of their own.
The program was re-established with the help of a $500 Michigan 4-H Foundation grant that provided funding for safety equipment and target backers. More recently, the program received a $2,700 grant through the Oceana Community Foundation, including support from the Ordoobadi Family Fund ($2,500) and the Oceana Youth Fund ($200). These funds will be used to purchase a shooting sports trailer that will allow instructors to safely transport equipment throughout the range and support youth who wish to participate in shooting sports competitions.
We are incredibly grateful to the volunteers and community organizations that have helped make this program possible. There has been a great deal of interest from families who wanted to see shooting sports return to our county, and it has been exciting to watch youth gain confidence and skills each week.
The club is actively looking for new members. Youth interested in learning more are encouraged to attend an upcoming meeting. The next club meeting will take place Tuesday, July 21 from 6-8 p.m. at the Fin and Feather Club located at 3276 N. Darr Rd. in Scottville.
