Shelby showed sparks Thursday night of being a team that could challenge a Mason County Central group Tigers' coach Jacob Tumele believes has as good a chance as anyone to win the West Michigan Conference Rivers. However, Shelby couldn't come up with enough big plays to outdo a potent MCC offense in a 41-20 defeat.
The visiting Spartans moved the ball very effectively, gaining 515 yards, 387 of them on the ground. Two different Spartans rushed for over 130 yards. Still, the Tigers showed some fight of their own, and only three red zone trips coming up empty kept them from giving MCC much more of a battle. The Tigers twice couldn't convert on fourth down inside MCC's 15-yard line, and on another occasion threw an interception.
"That's on me to put our kids in a better situation to be successful," Tumele said. "Hats off to MCC's defense and what they did."
Tumele has coached with Spartan counterpart Dave Smith and was impressed with the team he has, saying they won the physical battle at the line of scrimmage.
Still, however, the Tigers (1-1, 0-1 WMC Rivers) signaled that fans can be optimistic about what they can do this season. Shelby's front line on offense again paved the way for an effective running game, as Brody Fessenden ran for 135 yards on 18 carries and Jaylin Henderson had 97 on 12 attempts, including a touchdown run. Henderson also threw for 77 yards. The two senior stars also were the top tacklers on the team Thursday.
Tumele said Elijah Dashiell also stood out, less so for his on-field play - though he did have 69 total offensive yards - than for his leadership, a skill the coach said he's significantly improved since the offseason.
"Today, he responded in so many ways," Tumele said. "Telling kids, 'Next play mentality,' having a great speech at halftime about responding. 'We have to go compete for four quarters, because we're very close.'"
Tumele added that the team has no time to feel sorry for itself; North Muskegon comes to town next Friday. The Norsemen have not lost a single West Michigan Conference Rivers game since the division was formed in 2022.
"There's no 'poor me,' we just have to battle," Tumele said. "I believe our kids will be up to that challenge. The big thing I want to see is, can we respond?"
