District Health Department #10 (DHD#10), along with the Northern Michigan Public Health Alliance (NMPHA), is recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month by encouraging residents to seek preventative healthcare practices such as routine mammograms.
DHD#10 and the NMPHA want to empower women to get screened for both breast and cervical cancer by promoting the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Navigation Program (BC3NP).
BC3NP is designed to help eligible residents receive breast and cervical cancer screenings (mammograms and pap tests), and follow-up care, if needed.
“BC3NP is available for women ages 21-64,” said DHD#10 Community Health Program Supervisor Caitlin Cameron. “If a breast and/or cervical anomaly is identified from the screening, then she would be referred to a community healthcare provider for follow-up. The best part is that under BC3NP, over 75 different diagnostic services are provided free of cost for the patient.”
BC3NP not only helps with screenings, but also helps women in the event of a breast or cervical cancer diagnosis as part of the program. If a woman is diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer through the BC3NP, she could also be eligible to sign up for a special Medicaid program that will help pay for cancer treatments. Once treatment is no longer needed, she may still be eligible for continued, annual screenings through BC3NP.
