It doesn't get much closer than the doubleheader Shelby and North
Muskegon played Tuesday to open West Michigan Conference Rivers action.
The Tigers dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker in game one, and the teams were
tied 4-4 after the regulation seven innings in game two.
The nightcap will likely be finished at a later date, but no such date had been set as of Wednesday.
The
Tigers (6-1, 0-1 WMC Rivers) had a chance to tie game one when Cam
Smith had a leadoff single and stole second in the seventh inning, but
Norsemen pitcher Kylan Nielsen was able to get out of trouble. Jaden
Furman had Shelby's only other hit in the game, and Trevor Weiss scored
Shelby's only run when he stole home in the third inning.
Weiss pitched well in the defeat, allowing six hits and striking out four without a walk.
In
game two, the Norsemen jumped ahead 4-0 with a four-run third inning,
but Shelby battled back with one run in the fourth and a three-run
outburst in the sixth to tie the score. Weiss' bloop single brought home
a run in the sixth, and he and Chase Simon each scored later in the
inning on wild pitches.
Smith and Weiss each got two hits for
Shelby in the second game - Smith had a double - and Weiss drove in two
runs. On the mound, DayDay Garcia came on in relief and had an
outstanding performance to keep the Tigers in it, striking out eight and
allowing only one hit in 4 2/3 innings.
