Hart softball picks up pair of wins over county foe Pentwater

HART — In an intracounty doubleheader Thursday, Hart got the better of Pentwater, 11-0 and 14-4, taking advantage of strong pitching and some Pentwater fielding errors. The Falcons were charged with 13 miscues over the two games.
Game one was all Hart (10-8) from the get-go, and Reese Smith needed little help, as she recorded a five-inning no-hitter with 13 strikeouts. The Pirates scored four times in the first inning and six in the second. Smith wasted no time getting things rolling for her team, ripping a run-scoring double. Sydney Bateson then singled her in. In the second inning, Smith collected another RBI hit, a single, and Leah Walker also drove one in with a single. The Pirates took advantage of walks and some Falcon miscues in the field to keep scoring.
Smith's two hits and two RBI helped propel the offense, and Kora Hiddema had three RBI. Walker drove in two.

The Falcons (2-8) were the team off to a hot start in game two, scoring four second-inning runs (fueled by several walks) to grab a 4-1 lead.
However, Hart, which had already gotten a home run from Elyssa Tanis to open the scoring, responded with five runs in the third and never looked back. Smith got the run started with a RBI single, and Walker, Tanis and Hiddema followed with RBI hits. Hart scored in each of the remaining innings as well; Smith mashed a two-run homer in the fourth.
Smith had three hits and four RBI in game two, and Makenna Carrier got three hits and scored four times. Bateson, Tanis and Hiddema got two hits each. Smith pitched five hitless innings of relief and struck out 12.
For Pentwater, Amelia Barter and Paige Sadenwater-Riggs each got a hit, and Barter also drew two walks. Grace Riggs drew three walks. Falcons' coach Troy Holstad credited Lauren Davis with several impressive catches in center field.
