OCH&GS seeks local artifacts and bound history volumes

Garage, yard and estate sale season is here! As families and organizations prepare for any future sales, and yard sale lovers attend various sales this year, the Oceana County Historical & Genealogical Society (OCH&GS) encourages shoppers to keep an eye out for historic documents and artifacts related to Oceana County.
“If you come across something historical while getting ready for a sale or attending one, please consider letting us take a look at it. We are open Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. An artifacts policy is available on our website,” OCH&GS Board Secretary and Artifacts Committee member Sharon Hallack said.
The OCH&GS is particularly in need of school yearbooks from any Oceana County school from the past 25 years and any Oceana County History 1990 Volume I books. Volume I was the first in a series of three separate volumes that were produced by the Society in 1990, 1992 and 2005. Each volume includes important family, business, church and community group information.
“We are all out of Volume I, and it is highly sought after by visitors to the Society. If anyone should find one as they shop during summer yard sales this year, or if anyone has one they are not using, the Society would gladly accept it and pass it along to others,” said OCH&GS volunteer Diane Herin.
“Preserving our history is important. Whether it's photographs, scrapbooks, legal documents, antiques, school yearbooks or old newspapers, all can play a part in finding out more about your family and our community’s history. If you are interested in history or want to leave a legacy for the younger generations, please consider visiting us to learn more,” Hallack said.
The Oceana County Historical & Genealogical Society is located at 114 Dryden St. in Hart. Visit www.oceanahistory.com and navigate to "Get Involved" and then "Donate" for more information on donating historical artifacts.
