Reeths-Puffer and Whitehall each competed at the Ryder Cup-style
East-West Showdown Monday at Muskegon Country Club, in which teams from
the west side of the state were matched up against eastern foes to earn
points for their side.
It was the East team on top for the second year in a row, defeating the West 308.5-261.5.
However,
the Rockets' Sophia McCollum had another solid day, shooting an 83 to
earn third place on the individual leaderboard and winning her match to
earn points for the West. She made three consecutive birdies at one
point during her round.
Also for R-P, Olivia Ambler shot a 97,
including a birdie, and Ella Voorhies had a 101. Tala Johnson shot a
109 and did not have an opponent as her projected foe was out sick, said
Rockets' coach Matt Pallett. Voorhies won her match, while Ambler
dropped hers. The Rockets' team score of 390 would have placed them
fifth out of 10 scoring teams on the day under traditional scoring.
“Our
best golf is yet to come," Pallett said. "All of the girls had good
moments today. We just need to continue to work to be more consistent.”
Whitehall
was seventh on the team leaderboard with a 417. Riley Shafer led the
team and placed eighth overall by shooting a 90. Kelsie McClure had a
101, Avarie Bentz shot a 109 and Ryleigh Hershey had a 117.
