WHITEHALL — Shelby battled through close matches Saturday at the Whitehall Invitational, posting a 1-3 record.
The Tigers (7-8) finished their day with a tough win over Whitehall in three games, 21-25, 25-22, 15-13, a reward after three close defeats. Shelby lost matches to Newaygo (25-15, 22-25, 15-8), Kent City (25-19, 25-17) and Reeths-Puffer (28-26, 25-20).
Briar Peters led Shelby on the day with 27 kills and also paced the defense with 46 digs. Peyton Rapes passed out 56 assists for the team.
Also for the Tigers, Hali Hayes had 11 aces, including five against Newaygo alone. Peters chipped in seven aces. Izzy Rudat and Annabelle Stark each had four blocks. Stark had strong offensive efforts against Newaygo and Kent City, totaling 15 kills in those two matches and hitting .300 or better in both.
