Hart cross-country has strong showing at Shepherd meet; Shelby girls place 18th in girls' race

Hart had a good day among a hyper-competitive field Saturday at the Shepherd Invitational, with the Pirate boys finishing in second place and the girls taking third in the Gold divisions.
Shelby also raced at Shepherd, finishing 18th in the girls' meet. The Tigers did not have enough finishers to score in the boys' race.
Hart edged Lake City by four points and Covenant Christian by six in a very close boys' race. Aiden Schaner was the top Pirate finisher, coming in 20th place with a time of 17:34.8. Timothy Wolff was right behind Schaner, coming in 22nd (17:35.3).
Also scoring for Hart were Mason Opalewski in 32nd place (17:55.4), Trevor VanderKodde in 41st (18:07.6) and Owen VanderVlucht in 48th (18:19.9).
In the girls' race, Natalie Rosema earned the top finish by any Pirate, coming in ninth. Her time was 20:34.5. Alaina Schaner took 22nd for the Pirates in a time of 21:24.4.
Bryn Riley placed 32nd (21:48.1), Luisa VanderZwaag was 43rd (22:27.0) and Abigail Studer took 63rd (23:36.6) to get in the scoring column for Hart.
Noel Parker paced the Tiger girls by coming in 39th place and setting a season best time (22:11.99). Kathryn Beyer finished 82nd (24:45.5) and April Luna was 99th (25:51.9). Closing out the scoring were Sydney Reed (110th, 26:41.5) and Ava Lamberg (115th, 27:00.0).
Parker Weirich placed 70th for Shelby in the boys' race (19:08.96), followed shortly by Brycen Brown in 73rd (19:13.3). Emilio Bustos (148th, 25:52.97) and Declan Waller (150th, 26:16.8) also finished for the Tigers.
