Hart boys win Hart & Sole Music Invitational, girls finish 3rd; Walkerville sets 18 PRs

HART — The Hart boys' team defended its home turf Saturday with a victory at the Pirates' annual Hart and Sole Music Invitational, which featured eight teams.
The Pirates scored 121.5 points, beating out runner-up Traverse City St. Francis, which had 99 points. The Hart girls finished third behind Ludington and St. Francis. Walkerville also competed, placing seventh in the girls' meet.
Chase Lorenz picked up wins in all three sprint events for the Pirates, including setting a personal best in the 400-meter dash, where his time was 49.71 seconds. Lorenz also recorded times of 11.31 seconds in the 100 and 23.29 in the 200. He also helped the 1,600 relay team to a win, joining Lyric Fielder, Bryce Vander Kodde and Jack Slotman to take a time of 3:33.3.
Fielder added a win for Hart in the 300 hurdles, posting a time of 41.92 seconds.

Second-place Pirates were Trevor Vander Kodde in the high jump (5-10), Slotman in the pole vault (10-0) and the two sprint relays. Julian Tejada, Elon Babbin, Lucas Edwards and Pablo Ortega-Rubio was the 400 relay team (47.46), and the 800 team was Babbin, Ortega-Rubio, Bryce Vander Kodde and Jaxson Oomen (1:37.5).
Taking third for Hart were Grant Ackley in the pole vault (10-0), Silas Ackley in the 3,200 (10:24.1), Slotman in the 400 (54.46), and the 3,200 relay team of Mason Opalewski, Owen VanderVlucht, Grant Ackley and Trevor Vander Kodde (8:54.0).
Hart's girls team took three wins. Joselyn Flores won the high jump (5-0), Shelbie Choponis set a personal best to win the discus (119-11.5) and Alaina Schaner won the 800-meter run (2:38.2).
Choponis also took second in the shot put (30-7), and Lauren Hopkins was second in pole vault (8-6). Ellie Gross finished second in the 100 hurdles (17.78), and Addison Hain was second in the 400 (1:03.9). The 400 relay team of Lilian Payne, Chloe Simpson, Ashlyn Smith and Lilianna Camacho placed second (57.39), as did the 800 team of Gross, Camacho, Flores and Emery Velat (1:58.4).

Hain also finished third in the 100 (13.46), and the Pirate distance relays each finished third. The 1,600 team was Velat, Hain, Flores and Natalie Rosema (4:34.99) and the 3,200 team as Martina Saenz, Emma Miller, Schaner and Rosema (10:44.8).
Isabel Babbin brought home Walkerville's top finish at the meet, placing third in shot put (29-8). She set a personal best in that event and in the discus, where she was sixth (73-9). Hugh Tanner posted the Wildcat boys' best finish, coming in 11th in shot put (37-3.5) and setting a personal best in both that event and in the discus, where he was 15th (88-6). In all, the 'Cats set 18 PRs.
