SHELBY — Shelby’s offense made it 4-for-4 on the young season in scoring double-digit runs in its games Wednesday, walloping Manistee 22-0 and 17-2 in a sweep.
The Tigers piled up 17 runs in the second inning of game one to secure the win in three innings by mercy rule. Jayna Burmeister delivered the big blow in the inning with a grand slam home run; it was her second dinger of the game after also sending one out of the ballpark in the first inning.
Her homer was one of three RBI hits Burmeister had in the second inning, as she also collected a pair of run-scoring singles in the barrage.
Gabby LaFever and Izzy Rudat each brought in two runs on singles in the frame, and the Tigers took advantage of several walks and Manistee errors.
Burmeister had four hits and seven RBI overall in the big win. LaFever had three hits and scored three times. Rudat got two hits and drove in five runs, and Jordan Wolting and Jaedyn Allen each got two hits.
Burmeister allowed only one baserunner, on a walk, in a dominant performance in the circle. All nine of her outs came by strikeout.
Things didn’t change much in game two, as the Tigers piled up 14 runs in the first two innings and again secured a three-inning mercy-rule win.
Wolting opened the scoring with a RBI triple and LaFever and Allen followed with run-scoring singles. Rudat also drove in a run with a single in the inning. Rudat later mashed a solo home run in the second inning, and Burmeister and Emma Stovall both drove in a run with a single.
The numbers were again impressive for the Tiger attack. Rudat led with three hits and three RBI, and Burmeister, Stovall, Allen, Hali Hayes and Stella Springer collected two hits each.
Wolting picked up the win in the circle, striking out four and joining Burmeister in not allowing any hits.
