Shelby's perfect start to the season ended with a pair of tough defeats to North Muskegon Wednesday, 3-0 and 5-4.
The
Tigers (8-2, 0-2 West Michigan Conference Rivers) got eight hits to the
Norse's six in the opener, but couldn't get them at critical times.
North Muskegon scored all three of its runs in the first two innings.
Shelby's
best scoring chance was in the third inning, in which three of the four
Tiger batters got singles. Unfortunately, a double play erased one of
the hits, and North Muskegon threw Jayna Burmeister out trying to
advance to third base on a single by Jordan Wolting to end the inning.
Burmeister and Hali Hayes each got two hits for Shelby. Burmeister pitched a solid game in defeat, striking out nine.
In
game two, North Muskegon held a slim lead throughout the game and
turned back the Tigers' seventh-inning rally by intentionally walking
Hayes and recording a strikeout with the tying run at second base.
Jaedyn Allen's RBI double pulled Shelby within one down the stretch.
Burmeister
hit a first-inning home run as part of a 3-for-3 game. She scored three
times and drove in two runs. Jordan Wolting threw three innings of
relief and allowed only two hits and one run.
